Petro-Canada adds synthetic gear oil

New TRAXON Synthetic MTF 75W-80 is formulated for manual transmissions.

Petro-Canada Lubricants recently updated its TRAXON gear oil line has now expanded to include TRAXON Synthetic MTF 75W-80; a “premium performance” commercial vehicle manual transmission fluid formulated to provide extended drain capability up to 250,000 miles, deliver all-weather protection, and reduce maintenance costs.

The new product is recommended for extended drain service for manual gearboxes in Class 6, 7, and 8 trucks, and has been fully approved by Volvo Trucks North American (VTNA) and Mack Trucks for use in their synchronized automated manual transmission (AMT) applications, which are the I-Shift and mDrive, respectively.

The new TRAXON manual transmission fluid is intended for manual gear boxes of the G7/8,S,SR,SPO,AT and VT series from Volvo GTT up to a 250,000 miles drain interval and is also  suitable for use in many ZF transmission models including those fitted with ZF-Intarders , which includes the ASTronic, TCTronic, Ecolite, Ecomid and Ecospilt models.

Petro-Canada added that its TRAXON Synthetic MTF 75W-80 exceeds key performance parameters set by Volvo’s I-Shift specification (STD 1273.07-97307). The product maintained exceptional in-grade shear stability after a 20 hr KRL Shear test (CEC L-45-99) with a less than 3.5% loss, well within Volvo’s 5% maximum limit. The synthetic gearbox oil also outperformed Volvo’s viscosity increase limits after a demanding DKA oxidation test (CEC L-48-A-00) of 192 hours at 160oC limit in 100 degree viscosity testing with nearly half that of the 10% maximum limit.

The product has been specifically formulated to limit drag losses and reduce fuel consumption versus conventional manual transmission fluid and API GL-4 axle SAE 80W-90 / 75W-90 oils or higher viscosity grades, Petro-Canada noted, while also delivering improved oxidation stability to resist deposits and sludge formation which reduces issues with transmission shifting, system efficiency and equipment functionality.

“We are thrilled to enhance the TRAXON product line. We are committed to developing top-tier products that deliver operational excellence and cost-saving results for our customers,” noted Barnaby Ngai, category portfolio manager, Heavy Duty Engine and Driveline Oils, Petro-Canada Lubricants. “This unique fuel-efficient formulation is an advanced product to meet the future demands of new hardware, and is testament to raising the bar on our heavy duty driveline offering.”
